Applications are invited for a lecturer in probability with expertise in financial mathematics at the University of Manchester within the Probability and Statistics Group. Applications are sought from individuals who will help build the School's expertise and capacity in probability with application to financial mathematics, both through teaching (at undergraduate and postgraduate level) and research (including the supervision of PhD students). At present the School has several permanent members of staff, based in the Probability and Statistics Group and Applied Mathematics Group, with significant interests in financial mathematics, and also has close links with Manchester Business School.
The main duties of the post will lie in teaching and research. The former will include teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students by means of lectures, seminars, tutorials and examples classes, continually developing teaching material and learning experiences for students and acting as personal tutor to undergraduate students in accordance with the School’s current practice.
Research will involve undertaking research of high-quality in collaboration with colleagues and publishing the results in world-leading journals, books or similar organs and making applications for research grants and funding
Candidates should have a PhD, or equivalent relevant experience, and are expected to be an internationally recognised researcher in a relevant area of probability, with expertise in financial mathematics or, if in an earlier career stage, to show exceptional promise and ability. Also required are a record of original high-impact research that has won international recognition, as evidenced by publications in internationally-leading journals and a willingness and ablity to supervise postgraduate research students and undertake interdisciplinary research.

Applications are invited for the above two posts to start in September 2012 or an agreed date thereafter. This initiative is part of an ongoing programme to further strengthen applied mathematics in the area of numerical analysis. Applications can be from researchers in any area of numerical analysis and those areas of scientific computing that complement the current activities of the School of Mathematics. We especially encourage applications which strengthen research links between numerical analysis and other areas of applied mathematics and which would enable us to create new links within the School and with other schools, institutions or disciplines.
The appointee's primary duties will lie in research, in teaching and in administration. The appointee will be expected to build an independent and funded research programme in an area which is linked to existing research strengths and which is aligned with the University and Faculty research strategies.
Candidates must have (or be on course for) a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline with researcher experience in an area of numerical analysis, or if at the earlier stages of career, you must show exceptional promise and ability. Also required are: a record of original high-impact research that has won international recognition, as evidenced by publications in internationally-leading journals; the ability to make a significant contribution to the School's research activities; the potential to apply successfully for research grants from research councils and industrial organisations, and to manage these awards; the willingness and ability to supervise undergraduate postgraduate research students.
